The Steel Company that Helped Local Musicians in Northside

Echo
The building at 4048 Hamilton Avenue, was built in 1922 for the Benefit Steel Furnace Company because of its convenience to the railroad tracks. From the mid-1980s to the early 1990s, it housed the Hasselle Pottery of Bob Hasselle. Bob Hasselle was head of the Cincinnati Art Academy's Sculpture Department in the 1970s, where he started the ceramics program. He provided a welcoming place for creatives with his retail pottery studio, and like Crazy Lady's Bookstore located across the street, was an anchor for the redevelopment of Northside. Hasselle rented the second story loft of the building in 1990 to John Curley of Ultrasuede Studios. Curley and his studio partners recorded a number of local bands in the studio for the next few years, including his own band, the Afghan Whigs, and others like the Ass Ponys, Throneberries, and Love Cowboys. John Curley and his Ultrasuede Studios are responsible for making Northside an early haven for musicians.
