These men in bowler caps guard the Cumminsville Post Office at the Hoffner Masonic Lodge on Hamilton Avenue, shortly after its opening in 1885. Note the misspelling of “Cuminsville” in the window. This is the longest continually operating post office in Cincinnati. Ephraim Knowlton, the first postmaster, named this settlement Cumminsville in 1838, after David Cummins, the owner of the Grid Iron Tannery.
