Ladies Shoes, and the "Swellest Line of Shoes in Cincinnati"

Echo

The Helming-McKenzie Shoe Company was organized in 1887 by John Helming, Jr. and William S. McKenzie to manufacture ladies shoes. This photograph shows the warehouse at 4015-4019 Cherry Street, built in 1906 by Northside builders Frederick and Anthony Weber. The proximity to downtown slaughterhouses gave some cheap source of leather for the Northside shoe industry. Helming-McKenzie employed 500 shoe workers in 1914 and touted the “Swellest Line of Shoes in Cincinnati.”
