HERBERT'S CORNER

The Furniture Businesses That Towered over Northside

Echo

Peter Herbert (1847-1924) a German cabinetmaker, started a business in 1895 making wood, mantles, and hardware at 3944 Spring Grove Avenue. This 1914 etching shows the collection of newly built company buildings on both sides of the Ludlow Avenue Viaduct that was referred to as Herbert's Corner. U.S. furniture makers used Herbert's Corner with its automatic elevator, electric lighting, interchangeable loading system, as an example for their own facilities.

This advertisement from 1905, Northside Herald, shows a Victorian fainting couch made by the Herbert Furnisher Company. All of Peter's sons, John A., Frank A., George F., Edward F., and Alonze E., were involved in the business. John A. founded the Northside Business Association in 1907, and the Herbert descendants operate Herbert Motors on Spring Grove Avenue in Northside today.
