KNOWLTON'S CORNER

Native American Trails, and Northside's Grand Entrance

Echo

The heart of Northside, shown in this late 1880s photograph, is called Knowlton's Corner. It was the intersection of two Native American trails—St. Clair's Trace, following today's Hamilton Avenue, and Wayne Trace, following Spring Road Avenue. Both were well-traveled by the local Miami and Shawnee Indians and the U.S. Calvary who pursued them. The town pump, shown here, dried up when modern sewers were dug in the 1890’s for subdivisions.
