Popular Grove, a German beer garden at 3733 Spring Grove Avenue, was founded in the 1860s by Fredrick Spaeth (1824-1871) a German immigrant. It was purchased in 1912 from the estate of Fredrick Spaeth Jr. (1860-1912) by Theodor Hoelscher, an immigrant from the Rhineland in Germany, who remodeled the dining room to serve dinners for large family gatherings.
