This 1924 photograph shows St. Joseph's Orphanage at Blue Rock and Cherry Streets, now home to the McKie Recreation Center. Archbishop John Baptist Purcell purchased the 11-acre site from Jacob Hoffner in 1852 for half price for use as an orphanage. In 1854, Mother Superior Sr. Anthony O'Connell moved 100 boys via rail from the old orphanage downtown to the Northside.
