The German Catholic Church, Given Permission To be Started

Echo

St. Boniface's Parish was created when Archbishop John Baptist Purcell (1800–1883) gave the German Catholics of Northside permission to break with St. Aloysius' Parish and start their own church. By 1910, the congregation had grown so large that two sister parishes were born, St. Clare's in College Hill and St. Pius' in South Cumminsville. Under the guidance of Fr. George Schmidt, this sprawling Romanesque church, based on the Basilica of St. Paul's Outside the Walls in Rome, was built in 1927. (Courtesy of the Cincinnati Sisters of Charity Archves.)
