The First Integrated Cemetery In Cincinnati

Echo
Wesleyan Cemetery on Colerain Avenue, chartered in 1843, was the first integrated cemetery in Cincinnati. A group of runaway slaves known as the Cincinnati 28, aided by Levi Coffin in the late 1840's, staged a mock funeral procession from the Ohio River to the cemetery. They then used the Mill Creek to escape to a safe house in College Hill and on to freedom in Canada. Buried at Wesleyan Cemetery are veterans from all congressionally mandated wars.
